Why Have Photo Speed Enforcement?

Why do we need photo radar?

The number one traffic complaint among neighborhood residents is speeding.  Why are residents so concerned?  Because speeding in neighborhoods and school zones compromises the livability and safety of neighborhoods.  It makes playing outdoors hazardous to children, it increases background noise due to vehicles, and it makes walking, bicycling, and driving dangerous for all.

Is speeding really that dangerous?

Nationally, about one-third of all fatalities occur in speeding-related crashes.  Speeding also causes many accidents in our community every year, some of them fatal.  As part of Boulder's traffic safety program, the city operates the photo radar program, focusing photo speed enforcement on neighborhoods and school zones.

How does the city decide where to locate photo radar vans?

School zones are a high priority.  Locations with pedestrian crossings are also targeted.  Neighborhood streets that are used as secondary arteries are also prioritized.  Overall, the sites are largely determined based on citizen complaints and locations with a demonstrated history of negative impacts from speeding.

How will I know I am entering a speed enforcement zone?

A sign warning of the speed enforcement zone must be posted at least 300 feet before the speed enforcement van.
