City Council Members,
University Hill Event Street Completion Update
Construction of the University Hill Event Street – one of three Hill projects funded by the Community, Culture and Safety Tax – is nearing completion. Most work was completed on schedule and the street was re-opened to traffic before CU move-in week in August. Remaining work centers on custom-manufactured decorative and pedestrian lighting fixtures. Staff anticipates lighting installation can begin in late October to early November.
· Ribbon-cutting Ceremony: The Hill Boulder business association and Community Vitality will host a ribbon-cutting celebration when the street is complete. Members of the public, city council, Hill businesses, CU organizations and city staff will be invited. The Fox Theatre will arrange live music, and food will be provided by Hill businesses, reflecting the character of the Hill. Additionally, the first-ever “Hillanthropist of the Year” honors will be awarded to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the Hill since the start of the Hill Community Development program in 2014.
· Event Street Programming. The University Hill Commercial Area Management Commission (UHCAMC) made it a priority in 2017 to streamline the process for hosting events on the Hill, which led to businesses contributing extensively to the event street design. The final design includes larger spaces for pedestrian flow and features that make it easier to close the street for events, including additional signage and built-in sleeves for fencing (if the events involve liquor).
City staff and The Hill Boulder are coordinating with CU organizations interested in hosting events on the Event Street when it is complete, including the Alumni Association and the Conference on World Affairs. UHCAMC will host a workshop with The Hill Boulder to discuss additional opportunities for streamlining Hill events on Oct. 3.
