On Track: Anticipated repeal of disaster declaration in fall of 2021

Summary

On March 14 2020, The City of Boulder declared a local disaster emergency in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the effects it is having on the city. On March 16, City Council voted to extend the emergency until further notice. With guidance from federal, state, and county officials, the city continues to work with these partners to respond to the changing nature of the pandemic, recover from the economic, social, and environmental impacts, all while ensuring the well-being of our community members.

Milestones

  • Small business assistance including grants, subsidized delivery services, and modified permitting
  • In partnership with the county, stood up testing at Stazio and supported mobile testing to reach priority populations
  • Adapted many city services to remain open during the pandemic, including expanding online virtual operations, implementing capacity limits in city facilities, and provision of curbside services
  • Organized regular community briefings and other public information campaigns to keep the community well informed of pandemic developments
  • Conducted vaccine clinics in partnership with Governor Polis’ “Vaccines for All” effort specifically focused on our unsheltered community members; individuals and families in mobile home parks; downtown essential workers and other community members

Next Steps

  • Leverage city resources to help stop the spread through community education
  • Continued support of COVID-19 mobile testing and the drive-thru site at Stazio fields
  • Support county-wide vaccine distribution through community education and developing partnerships with providers
  • Support the recovery of Boulder businesses through creative programs and efficient processes
  • Connect community members to city programs and partners working to mitigate financial impacts of the pandemic
  • Following the lead of the state and county lifting of public health orders, demobilize formal response and recovery team and transition long-term efforts to departmental operations

Anticipated Council Action

Council will receive its next briefing on developments related to the pandemic in August 2021. The city anticipates formal repeal of the disaster declaration by council in late summer or early fall 2021, after public health orders have been lifted at the state and county levels.
