The Boulder Revised Code states at section 3-1-1 businesses “Engaged in business in the city means performing or providing services or selling, leasing, renting, delivering, or installing tangible personal property for storage, use or consumption within the city.” Determine if your business is within Boulder city limits.

  • Sales & Use Tax/Business License application fee is non-refundable​

  • Allow 4 to 6 weeks to process and email your license​​

  • Sales & Use Tax/Business Licenses are valid for the life of the business and do not require renewal .

    • Exceptions include: change in ownership, change of location, change of FEIN.

  • Regulatory Licenses are required for auctions, circus and carnivals, itinerant merchant, liquor, medical and recreational marijuana, mobile food vehicles, second hand dealer/pawnbroker, and special event liquor permits.  Regulatory Licenses require annual renewal .   • Zoning Review : A Zoning Review is required for all businesses physically located within the City of Boulder limits. A zoning review checks compatibility with the proposed business activities and the permissible activities or “uses” within the land use designation or “zone”. The permissible uses by zone are available in Table 9-1 B.R.C. 1981. The City defines the permissible uses in 9-16-1 B.R.C. 1981. Determine if your business is within Boulder city limits.
    • For businesses within the City, the application cannot be processed without a complete description of the proposed business activities as detailed below. If information provided is insufficient, review times may be delayed.

  • There is a Universal Zero Waste Ordinance in the City of Boulder that requires businesses to separate recyclables and compostables from the trash and provide properly placed containers and signs to facilitate the collection of the three separated waste streams.
