Local Firefighters and Parks and Recreation Team Up to Brighten Holiday Season for Boulder Youth From Low-Income Families

In 2016, the Toy Drive served over 150 families and children, providing nearly 500 gifts to Boulder’s youth

The City of Boulder along with Boulder Fire Department’s IAFF Local 900 union invite you to play Santa with us this year. It is an opportunity to give some very special toys for some very special kids.

The Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Services Initiative (YSI) program is working with firefighters to support and strengthen local families in need during this holiday season with its annual Toy Drive. For the tenth consecutive year, the two agencies are collaborating to bring some holiday spirit to Boulder's youth from low-income families.

“We love collaborating with our local firefighters on this annual tradition," said Dean Rummel, parks and recreation programs and partnerships manager. "Truth is, we are also recipients of the Toy Drive gifts as we get to feel the joy in knowing that we're relieving some of the burden of stress from families who may not otherwise have the resources to go shopping."

YSI provides youth from low-income families with opportunities and resources necessary to make positive recreational, educational and lifestyle choices through after-school programs and community involvement activities.

In 2016, the Toy Drive served over 150 families and children, providing nearly 500 gifts to Boulder’s youth. This success is not only due to community member donations, but Boulder’s Fire Department’s IAFF Local 900 union which donates money to help purchase gifts for YSI families currently living at citywide low-income housing sites (managed by Boulder Housing Partners).

All donations of new, unwrapped toys are appreciated, no matter how big or small; even the smallest gift can bring a smile to a child during the holiday season. Donation boxes are available until Saturday, Dec. 16 at the following locations:

  • North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway
  • East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Drive
  • South Boulder Recreation Center, 1360 Gillaspie Drive
  • The Kinesis Dance Studio, 5603 Arapahoe Ave., Suite 6

Community members who would like to contribute to the YSI Holiday Toy Drive can also donate by calling 303-413-7217. All funding exceeding the amount needed for the toy drive event will be placed in the YSI Scholarship Fund, which helps support year-round recreation programs for low-income and underrepresented youth.

In addition to the Toy Drive, YSI also will host two holiday parties for program youth and their families on:

  • Thursday, Dec. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway
  • Friday, Dec. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Boulder Community Center,
    5660 Sioux Drive

Community members who would like help at one of these events (set-up, serve food, clean-up, etc.) can call 303-441-4427 to volunteer and check what opportunities are available.

For more information, visit the YSI website or call Dean Rummel, programs and partnership manager at 303-441-4427.
