Nature Hikes and Programs

Natural Selections is our ongoing series of educational nature programs on topics including ecology, wildlife, local history, night hikes, field workshops with local artists, star-gazing, children’s programs, plus many more. All programs are free and open to the public. Please do not bring dogs except for special dog-guardian hikes.

Teachers, scout troops and community groups can obtain free individual programs from Open Space and Mountain Parks naturalists, visit the  Request an Environmental Education Program page to learn more.

Sunrise Solstice & Full Moon Walk

Rise early to watch the moon set over the mountains and the sun rise over the prairie on this solstice hike at South Mesa Trail.

Awaken your Wild Spirit on this 4 mile December 25 holiday hike. Bring friends, family, visitors, and holiday morsels to share.

Guided Hike - Royal Arch Trail

@ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join the OSMP Recreation Coordinator for the most requested hike in the park and get excited about a new year, new you.

New Year’s Day Stroll in the Brisk Woods

@ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Start the New Year fresh, with a hike in Chautauqua. We will cover some basic winter hiking tips as we walk to Woods Quarry for beautiful views.

Winter Wonder Walk at Chautauqua

@ 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join OSMP naturalists to experience winter in all its glory! We will take a moderate hike and explore the landscape and its wild inhabitants.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart: Community Campfire

@ 2 to 6 p.m.

Share the joys of winter with an afternoon of stories, song, hiking, and friendship, enhanced by the warmth of a fire. All ages welcome!

Nature for Kids & Parents: Tracking Tales

@ 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Tracking is exciting! It's like being a detective: you learn about animals' ways and find clues to understand their stories.

Owl Moon

@ 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Walk under a brilliant full moon to explore the world of great-horned owls on this easy nighttime hike. With luck we'll see and hear owls!

Animal Hat Hike!

@ 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Wear an animal hat to story time as we flap our arms and stomp our feet to celebrate animals in winter. Then we'll take a short, kid-friendly hike.
