Nature Hikes and Programs

Natural Selections is our ongoing series of educational nature programs on topics including ecology, wildlife, local history, night hikes, field workshops with local artists, star-gazing, children’s programs, plus many more. All programs are free and open to the public. Please do not bring dogs except for special dog-guardian hikes.

Teachers, scout troops and community groups can obtain free individual programs from Open Space and Mountain Parks naturalists, visit the  Request an Environmental Education Program page to learn more.

Nature Play Date at Wonderland Lake!

@ 9 to 11 a.m.

Join OSMP for a morning of nature play! Nature Play Dates offer opportunities to relax with your children in nature. Drop in and explore. All ages welcome.

Geology for the Average Bear

@ 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Boulder’s rocks tell wild stories that include dinosaurs, glaciers, vast swamps, oceans and ancient mountain ranges now vanished into the dust of time.

Relaxing Through Forest Bathing

@ 6 to 9 p.m.

Learn the Japanese stress-busting technique of Shinrin Yoku - "forest bathing" - on this relaxing hike, while you soak up the calm of nature.

Hiking & Watercolor Painting Workshop

@ 8 to 11 a.m.

Join Boulder painter Kathleen Lazoni for a beautiful hike to appreciate nature through an artist's eye - plein air painting, drawing and writing as we go.

Join OSMP’s Jeff Kagan, Paige Doughty and Mark Wesson for a fun evening of children’s music at Chautauqua Park. Bring a family picnic.

Nature Play Date on Flagstaff Mountain!

@ 2 to 4 p.m.

Nature Play Dates offer opportunities to relax with your children in nature. Drop in to enjoy the cool mountain air and run around in the pine forest!

Mesa Trail Full Moon Hike

@ 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Take an evening hike down the entire length of the Mesa Trail and watch the full moon rise while you walk! This is a one-way 6 mile hike.

Walkin’ in the Moonlight

Join a family-fun hike in the moonlight to hear amazing stories and learn incredible science about the Earth's nearest neighbor.

Singing With Nature’s Heartbeat

@ 3 to 6 p.m.

Explore the forest through joyous impromptu singing - everyone can do it! Learn songs reflecting nature’s beauty, then make up your own.

Escape to White Rocks

@ 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Enjoy an easy hike around the White Rocks, an area so fragile and precious that it is ordinarily closed to visitation.
