Nature Hikes and Programs

Natural Selections is our ongoing series of educational nature programs on topics including ecology, wildlife, local history, night hikes, field workshops with local artists, star-gazing, children’s programs, plus many more. All programs are free and open to the public. Please do not bring dogs except for special dog-guardian hikes.

Teachers, scout troops and community groups can obtain free individual programs from Open Space and Mountain Parks naturalists, visit the  Request an Environmental Education Program page to learn more.

Nature Play Date!

Join OSMP for a morning of nature play! Nature Play dates offer opportunities to relax with your children in nature. Drop in and explore. All ages welcome.

Treasures of White Rocks

@ 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

White Rocks is rich in local history and geological stories, and protects plants and animals of exceptional local rarity.

Going Batty!

@ 5 to 7 p.m.

Bats! Scary, bloodsuckers that get stuck in people’s hair? Or gentle, helpful, misunderstood animals? Learn about Boulder's bats on a night hike.

Escape to White Rocks

@ 1 to 5 p.m.

Enjoy an easy hike around the White Rocks, an area so fragile and precious that it is ordinarily closed to visitation.

OSMP After School Adventures

@ 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Join OSMP for an After School Nature Adventure! This is a chance for you to relax with your children in nature. Drop in and explore. All ages welcome.

Hoo! Hoo! Halloween Story Time and Kids Hike

@ 10 to 11 a.m.

Join us for Halloween-themed stories about owls in the barn and bats on the beach! Then take a short, kid-friendly hike around Chautauqua.

Coordinating a Rescue – Mallory Cave

@ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn how to coordinate an emergency response or rescue in the field - a life-saving skill for the novice and experienced outdoor enthusiast.

The Secret of Wind and Birds

@ 8:30 to 11 a.m.

A pre-concert hike to prepare for the Boulder Philharmonic's performance of The Secret of Wind and Birds and hear how wind and birds appear in music!

Howl-O-Ween! a Dog Trick-or-Treating Event

@ 11 a.m.

Drop by with your dog for trick-or-treat fun with your best friend. Amusing dog activities and costumes - dog and human - are highly encouraged.

Open Space - Science of a Living Planet

@ 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Lafayette Open Space naturalist Martin Ogle will share how rock, water, plants and animals are seamlessly connected as a single, living system.
