Broadway-Poplar Pedestrian Improvements Project

Broadway-Poplar Pedestrian Improvements Project

Project Update

Construction Update

Construction is planned to begin late-February, and is anticipated to take about two months to complete.

Construction impacts will include pedestrian detours, temporary transit stop closures or relocations, closure of the on-street bike lane and road shoulder (bikes will merge with traffic), and vehicle lane shifts.

For the most up-to-date information on construction impacts, visit the city's Construction and Traffic Impacts webpage, Boulder Cone Zones

Project Background

The Broadway-Poplar Pedestrian Improvements Project (Broadway-Poplar Project) will provide additional safety, accessibility and drainage improvements to the existing sidewalk, transit stops and roadway on the east side of Broadway between Norwood Avenue and the Lucky's Marketplace driveway south of Quince Avenue.

The City received requests from north Boulder residents for a pedestrian crossing to be installed at the intersection of Broadway and Poplar Ave to provide a safer crossing to existing sidewalk and transit stops on the east side of Broadway.

Currently, sections of the existing sidewalk on the east side of Broadway have settled and the lack of curb and gutter on the roadway allows runoff from the street to collect on the settled sidewalks.  Transit stops at Norwood and Poplar do not currently meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Recognizing these current conditions make for an unsafe and uncomfortable walking experience, the city prioritized the project and began planning for construction to occur in summer, 2017.

Project Improvements

The Broadway-Poplar Project will provide the following improvements between Norwood Ave and the Lucky's Marketplace driveway:

  • Construction of an on-street crossing with a rectangular rapid flash beacon and a new pedestrian refuge island on Broadway at Poplar Ave
  • New curb and gutter for storm water drainage along east Broadway
  • Reconstruct sections of the existing sidewalk on the east side of Broadway to improve storm drainage
  • Transit stop improvements to meet ADA requirements
  • New bikeable shoulder
  • New light pole at the northwest corner of Broadway and Poplar

Project Schedule

Planning and design began in winter 2016. Construction will begin in February, 2018 and take about two months to complete.
