Annual Youth Services Initiative (YSI) Art Show opens May 1

The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Service Initiative (YSI) will host its annual YSI Art Show beginning on Monday, May 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway. The YSI Art Show exhibit will be on display through May 31. Admission is free.

The YSI Art Show, now in its sixth year, celebrates culture, art and collaboration with community partners through youth art. All art in the show is created by participants in the City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department’s YSI program. The theme for the 2017 show is “This is who I am.” The exhibit showcases the next generation of local artists expressing their culture, creativity and perspective of Boulder.

“This is a very special way to showcase our youth with a place to express and share their stories through creativity,” said Alexis Moreno, City of Boulder recreation supervisor – youth and families. “Our program is unique and is supported by many community organizations that have extended their expertise in educating our young artists about various forms of art expression. Art is a great way for these kids to connect their stories to their culture and the larger Boulder community.”

YSI provides youth from low-income families with opportunities and resources necessary to make positive recreational, educational, and lifestyle choices through after-school programs and community involvement activities. In preparation for this art show, youth are provided with opportunities to learn art education, engage their critical thinking skills and use creative outlets to express their talent. Local partners working with YSI youth from undeserved communities within Boulder include Boulder Housing Partners, Pottery Lab, PoshSplat Art Studio and Boulder Parks and Recreation.

The YSI Art show has steadily grown each year. For the first time in its history, the showcased art will also be available for purchase this year. Artwork can be purchased in exchange for a donation to the YSI scholarship program which will assist families with financial barriers to be able to participate in Boulder Parks and Recreation programs and facilities.
