Council Approves Process to Acquire Xcel Energy Assets, City to Host Local Power Information Session on Dec. 13

Meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the West Boulder Senior Center

On Tuesday, the Boulder City Council approved a motion that authorizes the city to move forward with the acquisition of Xcel Energy’s property assets. This process will allow the city to determine a price for the assets prior to the community decision on Local Power, currently scheduled for November 2020.

The public hearing, as well as council’s deliberation and vote are available to watch on the city’s website and YouTube channel.

Consistent with its commitment to provide regular updates on the project, the city will also host a Dec. 13 public meeting to share the latest work related to the development of a local electric utility. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the West Boulder Senior Center (909 Arapahoe Ave.).

At the meeting, Director of Climate Initiatives Steve Catanach will provide an update on the project, including acquisition and recent filings at the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. Staff will also discuss power supply, or how the electricity of the local utility might be generated.

The city will also provide a demonstration of the Financial Forecast Tool, a financial analysis instrument that allows the city to evaluate the financial feasibility of the utility. The latest financial analysis was shared with council on Dec. 6 as part of an information packet memo.

Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops to participate in the demonstration of the Financial Forecast Tool, if desired.

A video recording of the meeting, including the demonstration, will be available on the Local Power webpage at bouldercolorado.gov/Local-Power.
