Boulder SWAT team responds to a reported hostage situation in Boulder
The Boulder Police Department is continuing to investigate a situation that resulted in a SWAT team call-out early this morning.
The incident started shortly before 2 a.m. when a mother in North Carolina contacted the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office to report that her adult son, Ian Burch, was being held hostage at gunpoint at U Club on 28th apartment complex in the 800 block of 28th Street. She indicated that her son refused to speak with law enforcement but she would relay some information.
Because the address was within city limits, the sheriff’s office notified Boulder police. Officers responded to the address provided by Burch’s mother. After contacting the occupants inside that apartment, it was determined that they were not involved in any criminal activity. While leaving the apartments, officers located Burch hiding in another area of the complex.
Police spoke with Burch, who indicated that he had previously been in a different apartment and that the occupants there had multiple handguns and a rifle. Because of safety concerns, the responding officers asked for SWAT team assistance.
The occupants of the second apartment were initially uncooperative but police ultimately gained access inside. No weapons were located.
At this time, no one has been arrested. Based on preliminary information, police believe Burch and the occupants of the second apartment know each other. The investigation is continuing.
