City to close crosswalk, lane on Canyon Boulevard starting tomorrow to replace curbs and gutters
Alternate travel routes are advised

Beginning early tomorrow morning, Thursday, March 30, the City of Boulder will replace curbs and street gutters on the south side of Canyon Boulevard at the 11th Street crosswalk. The work will require the closure of the Canyon Boulevard pedestrian crosswalk at 11th Street and will reduce eastbound traffic on Canyon Boulevard to one lane. The crosswalk closure and lane reduction are scheduled to begin early Thursday morning. All areas are expected to reopen on Saturday morning, April 1. The project schedule is dependent on weather.

This work is necessary to improve safety at the 11th Street crosswalk of Canyon Boulevard, which connects downtown Boulder to the Civic Area. The work is part of the larger Civic Area park construction project, which is funded through the voter-approved Community, Culture and Safety tax to improve community spaces, bolster cultural projects and organizations, and enhance safety. When complete, the improved crosswalk will allow for safer and easier pedestrian access to and from the new, soon-to-be-opened 11th Street spine pedestrian bridge.

Alternate travel routes are advised for pedestrians wanting to cross Canyon at 11th Street. Pedestrian traffic will be marked and detoured around the immediate work area to the crosswalk at the Broadway and Canyon intersection. The Canyon Street crosswalk at 9th Street and the crosswalk connecting the southeast corner of the St Julien Hotel to the Civic Area will both remain open.

Vehicles traveling eastbound on Canyon Boulevard from 9th to Broadway Street should expect delays due to the lane closure. While Canyon will remain open in this direction, vehicle congestion is expected to increase, especially during rush hour. Eastbound drivers may consider detouring to either Walnut Street or Arapahoe Avenue at 9th Street to pass through the area.
