Flood-related Closures

Road Closures in the City of Boulder

  • Gregory Canyon Road
  • Pennsylvania Avenue Flood Repair between 7 th  Street and Dean Place
  • Cypress Drive between 55 th  Street and Sycamore Avenue
    • Cypress Drive will be closed to through traffic east of Sycamore Avenue.
    • Roxwood Lane will be closed to through traffic south of Euclid Avenue.
    • The southbound bike lane on 55 th Street will be closed at Cypress Drive and bicyclists will be directed to merge with vehicular traffic.
    • Work is scheduled to take approximately one month to complete.
    • This project will include pavement reconstruction and installation of a new storm drain pipe.

63rd Street Multimodal Improvements
Voter-approved Bond Project

  • 63 rd Street is closed at Leggett Ditch, north of Arapahoe Avenue, until May 2014.
  • Access to businesses, facilities and parks will remain open, with through traffic detoured onto 55 th Street.
  • This Capital Improvement Bond-funded project includes replacement of the 63 rd Street bridge over Leggett Ditch, continuous bike lanes in both directions, and a sidewalk on the west side of 63 rd Street.

2014 Annual Sidewalk Repair Program

  • There will be pedestrian detours and parking restrictions, where posted, on 14 th Street between Walnut and Spruce streets.
  • Access to adjacent businesses will be maintained at all times and a sidewalk on one side the street will always remain open.
  • The area will be under construction for approximately six weeks for sidewalk, curb and roadway pavement improvements.

2014 Concrete Repair - Pavement Maintenance Program

  • Mapleton Avenue will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic between 4 th and 5 th streets. There will also be full-time single-lane closures, with traffic control personnel in place. Parking will be restricted, where posted.
  • There will be lane reductions, pedestrian detours, and parking restrictions on the following streets:
    • Pine Street between 4 th and 11 th streets;
    • Highland Avenue between 4 th to 8 th streets;
    • 5 th Street between Pine Street and Mapleton Avenue;
    • 7 th Street between Highland and Mapleton avenues; and
    • 8 th Street between Pine Street and Mapleton Avenue.
  • This concrete repair work is being completed in advance of the annual street resurfacing and reconstruction program later in 2014.

2014 Street Resurfacing/Reconstruction
Funded In-part by the Voter-approved Bond

  • From Thursday, April 24, through Friday, May 2, 14th Street will be closed between Spruce and Walnut streets on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Access to Lawry Lane from 14th Street will be detoured to 15th Street.
    • Pedestrian access along 14th Street will be maintained at all times.
    • Parking restrictions will be in place, where posted.
  • On Friday, April 25, and Friday, May 2, 13th Street will also be closed between Spruce and Walnut streets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Vehicles will be directed to exit Lawry Lane at Broadway.
    • Pedestrian access along 13 th Street will be maintained at all times.
    • Final paving on 13 th Street will be scheduled for the week of April 28.
  • There will also be intermittent lane closures and parking restrictions, where posted, in the south Table Mesa Drive area on the following streets:
    • Bear Mountain Road, north of Viewpoint Road;
    • Cripple Creek Trail from Lehigh Street to Cripple Creek Square;
    • Drexel Street from Darley to Emerson avenues;
    • Heidelberg Drrive from Loyola Court to Gillaspie Drive;
    • Redstone Lane, west of Cripple Creek Trail;
    • Tincup Court, south of Lehigh Street; and
    • Viewpoint Road from Bear Mountain Drive to Cragmoor Road.
  • This Capital Improvement Bond-funded project will resurface (overlay) and reconstruct pavement on 13 th and 14 th streets between Pine and Walnut streets.

Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction
Voter-approved Bond Project

  • 18 th and 21 st streets will each be narrowed to one lane of alternating traffic north of Arapahoe Avenue.
  • There will be a single lane closure on Arapahoe Avenue between 18 th and 21 st streets and 22 nd and 23 rd streets, with traffic maintained in both directions, 24 hours a day.
  • From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, Arapahoe Avenue will be narrowed to one lane of alternating traffic between 18 th and 21 st streets.
  • Traffic control personnel will be in place to direct traffic.
  • There will be sidewalk detours in place and a sidewalk on one side of the street will remain open at all times.
  • Access to area businesses will be maintained at all times.
  • The JUMP bus service is operating on Arapahoe Avenue.
  • This Capital Improvement Bond-funded project involves reconstructing Arapahoe Avenue into concrete from Folsom to 15 th streets, along with other improvements to preserve and enhance the corridor.

Boulder Junction: Junction Place Bridge at Goose Creek
Voter-approved Bond Project

  • There will be a temporary alignment shift of the Goose Creek path between 30 th Street and the BNSF railroad.
  • This Capital Improvement Bond-funded project will construct a new bridge linking Junction Place on the north and south sides of Goose Creek, including connections to the Goose Creek path.
  • Construction is scheduled to be completed in fall 2014.

Boulder Junction: Pearl Parkway (North Side, 30th Street to Foothills Parkway) Multiway Boulevard and Multi-use Path

  • Pearl Parkway will be narrowed to one lane of traffic in each direction from west of 30 th Street to west of Foothills Parkway, 24 hours a day.
  • The speed limit in the area will be reduced to 25 mph and traffic control personnel will be in place to direct traffic.
  • There will be additional traffic delays due to increased trucking activity for materials delivery in Boulder Junction area.
  • Frontier Avenue will be narrowed to one lane of alternating traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
  • There will be parking restrictions in place, where posted, along Frontier Avenue between Pearl Parkway and Pearl Street.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle detours may be in place.
  • The westbound bus stop has been temporarily relocated to the northwest corner of Frontier Avenue and Pearl Parkway.
  • This project will construct the north side of the Pearl Parkway multiway boulevard (30 th Street to BNSF railroad) and a new multi-use path (BNSF railroad to Foothills Parkway) and will take approximately one year to complete.

Hawthorn Avenue Open to Local Traffic Only West of 4th Street

  • Hawthorn Avenue will be open to local traffic only west of 4 th Street while crews replace an irrigation culvert.

Iris Avenue Sidewalk Construction Between 28th and 30th Streets

  • There will be lane narrowings during daytime hours on Iris Avenue between 28 th and 30 th streets while crews construct a new sidewalk.

Pearl Street Mall Irrigation Replacement

  • There will be temporary area closures and detours on the 1200 block of the Pearl Street Mall, including the east side of Broadway and west side of 13 th Street.
  • There will be temporary area closures and detours near the contra-flow bike lane along the east side of 13 th Street between Spruce and Walnut streets. 
  • 13 th Street and the contra-flow bike lane will remain open.
  • Access to area businesses will be maintained throughout the project, which is scheduled to be completed in April 2014.
  • This is part of a three-year project to replace the 35-year old irrigation system in and around the Pearl Street Mall.

Street Patching Projects

  • Crews will be patching streets at the following locations from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
    • Monday and Tuesday, April 21 and 22 - in the intersection of St. Petersburg Street and Scarsdale Place; and
    • Wednesday and Thursday, April 23 and 24 - in the intersection of  St. Johns Avenue and New Haven Court.
  • There will be short-term traffic delays and alternate routes are advised.
  • Parking will be limited during working hours.

West Pearl Streetscape Improvements
Voter-approved Bond Project

  • From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, there will be lane, parking space, and sidewalk closures along the north side of Pearl Street between 10 th and 11 th streets.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be directed onto Pearl Street.
  • All of the bike racks along the north side of Pearl Street between 10 th and 11 th streets have been removed and relocated to the south side.
  • The existing sidewalks are being torn out, replaced, and upgraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and drainage in the parking areas will be improved.
  • The city and contractors will strive to complete this first construction phase in six weeks.
  • Access to adjacent businesses will be maintained at all times and a sidewalk on one side of the street will always remain open.
  • This Capital Improvement Bond-funded project will install pedestrian, irrigation, and streetscape improvements on Pearl Street between 7 th and 11 th streets, including the 9 th and 10 th street intersections and the Lawry Lane alley between 9 th and 11 th streets.

Private Projects

28th and Pearl Streets Lane Closures

  • From 9 a.m to 4 p.m. daily, there will be alternating right and left lane closures in all four directions at the intersection of 28 th and Pearl streets.
  • One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times.
  • Colorado boring will be potholing and boring across the intersection.

Other Government Projects

51st Street Reconstruction Between Jay Road and the Boulder Reservoir

  • Boulder County is reconstructing 51 st Street between Jay Road and the Boulder Reservoir.
  • Cyclists should exercise caution while using the roadway, since the top layer of pavement has been removed.
  • Originally scheduled for September 2013, this project is now scheduled to be completed by May 15, 2014.
  • The project includes removing the old pavement, re-establishing the old road shoulders and repaving the entire length of the project.
  • A new connection between the Diagonal Highway (SH 119) and “old” 51st Street will also be installed as part of the project.

Diagonal Highway 119 Underpass at Airport Road

  • Through Dec. 24, 2014, Boulder County will be constructing a new bicycle and pedestrian underpass crossing of the Diagonal Highway 119 at Airport Road.
  • Northbound traffic will be rerouted around the construction site and the speed limit will be reduced to 50 mph.
  • Highway users should expect minor delays during construction hours.
  • All lanes of the highway will remain open and a bicycle shoulder will be included in the detour pavement.
  • Beginning Monday, May 5, Ogallala Road will be closed for the duration of the project.

Lefthand Canyon from US 36 to James Canyon and James Canyon to Balarat Road Closed to Cyclists

  • Through May 1, 2014, Lefthand Canyon from US 36 to James Canyon, and James Canyon to Balarat Road will be closed to cyclists, 24/7.
  • Motorists are asked to avoid the canyons unless travel is necessary. 
  • Crews are removing major debris hazards from the area before spring runoff and continuing road reconstruction.

State Highway (SH) 93 Project

  • The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be replacing the asphalt roadway and adding six-foot shoulders on SH 93 between SH 170 (Eldorado Springs Drive) and SH 128.
  • CDOT will also be constructing an underpass to allow bicycle, pedestrian and equestrian traffic to safely cross underneath SH 93 at the Community Ditch Trail.
  • Motorists can expect reduced speed limits, lane closures and delays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
  • While the underpass is being built, the existing Community Ditch Trail crossing at SH 93 will be closed and several trails will temporarily become out-and-back trails.

  • The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-September 2014.

US 36 Express Lanes Project - Phase 2

  • Phase 2 construction includes traffic impacts in both directions between 88 th Street in Louisville and Table Mesa Drive in Boulder.
  • The major project elements include:
    • replacement of the Coal Creek Bridge;
    • rehabilitation of the South Boulder Creek bridge; and
    • widening of the McCaslin Boulevard bridge to accommodate a diverging diamond interchange.
