Pedestrian Crossing Treatments

Pedestrian Crossing Treatments

One of the goals of the city's Transportation Master Plan (TMP) is to provide a transportation system that emphasizes the role of walking as a primary mode of travel. This goal is supported by providing safe and efficient pedestrian crossing treatments.

Pedestrian Crossing Treatment Installation Guidelines Update

The City of Boulder first adopted policy for the installation of pedestrian crossing treatments in 1996, with the most current adopted version being the 2011 Pedestrian Crossing Treatment Installation Guidelines (PCTIG).

This document assists staff with determining where it is appropriate to install pedestrian crossing treatments and what type of treatment to install.

Status of Current Location Evaluations

The Prioritization and Candidate Location Summary lists locations that are planned for construction. The summary also lists:
  • locations that have been evaluated and determined not to meet the criteria;
  • locations that are still being evaluated; and
  • locations that have already been constructed.

Pedestrian Crossing Treatment Safety

In 2010, staff conducted a study of all bicycle and pedestrian accidents that occurred in the City of Boulder between January 2008 and April 2011.

The Safe Streets Boulder report and its attachment, Countermeasures for High-collision Locations, provide information about pedestrian and bicycle accidents, as well as engineering, enforcement, and educational countermeasures the city is currently pursuing.
