In 2012, a group of CU Boulder astrophysicists started a slow-pitch softball team named Fowl Ball. But this wasn’t just about softball, it was about connection.

As self-proclaimed “nerdy” scientists, they admitted socializing didn’t always come naturally, so weekly games became a vital commitment: a chance to unplug, laugh and share life outside the lab. Rain or shine, they’d still gather, either to play, or to meet up for burgers and beers.

Over the years, teammates moved away, started families and got busier, but despite that, they kept coming back to Boulder. Now 36 seasons in, they've built a brotherhood rooted in tradition, friendly competition and showing up for each other. And every season brings new stories. One year, NFL legend Ricky Williams, the Heisman-winning running back, was visiting Boulder, looking for something to do, so he ended up playing on the team. During a game, he accidentally hit an opposing player. The guy was ready to argue, until he realized who had hit him. Minutes later, he walked away with a sore forearm, and Ricky’s autograph.

Last year, after more than a decade of playing together, Fowl Ball finally clinched the league championship, earning the coveted league championship T-shirts, and serious bragging rights. This year, they are on track to play in the championships again.

“Boulder Parks and Rec is committed to making these leagues fun and welcoming," says Jay, one of Fowl Ball’s original founders. "You’ll see the same teams season after season. It’s more than a game, it’s a community.”

Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just here to have some fun, there's something for everyone in Boulder Parks and Rec leagues.
