The City of Boulder continues to receive top marks for its inclusive laws, policies, and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, according to the latest Municipal Equality Index (MEI) report from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. Boulder has earned the maximum score of 100 for the fifth consecutive year, reinforcing its commitment to equality and inclusion for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The MEI, which evaluates how municipalities support LGBTQ+ people through non-discrimination laws, inclusive employment practices, municipal services, law enforcement, and city leadership on equality, once again placed Boulder at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. Hundreds of cities across the country are rated annually, and Boulder’s continued top ranking highlights the city’s dedication to ensuring that LGBTQ+ individuals feel safe, valued, and supported.
“We are honored to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign for our commitment to creating an inclusive Boulder. This achievement reflects years of work by the city and community partners to foster a welcoming environment for all LGBTQ+ residents,” said Pam Davis, Assistant City Manager and LGBTQ+ Liaison. “However, in light of the recent challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community nationwide, we remain committed to expanding our efforts. There is always more to be done to ensure that our city remains a place of safety, belonging, and equity for everyone.”
Boulder’s top score reinforces the city's continued leadership in LGBTQ+ rights, bolstered by policies that promote non-discrimination, accessibility, and protection for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. As the fight for LGBTQ+ equality faces new challenges, the city remains steadfast in its role as a beacon of inclusivity.
