Applications are open for community organizations to bring nature-based play opportunities and experiences to local neighborhood parks.

The City of Boulder seeks community organizations, groups and educators who are passionate about nature discovery and play to submit creative program proposals to the 2026 Nature Park Facilitators Pilot Program.

Supporting youth development is regularly identified as a community priority and research is clear that time in nature contributes to healthy youth development. The Nature Parks Facilitators Pilot Program supports the city’s Nature Everywhere Initiative to increase youth access and engagement within city parks through interactions with natural elements. The pilot will authorize commercial use to selected community organizations to host hands-on, nature-focused programs in local neighborhood and community parks.

Proposed program types can include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitored free play for children of all ages
  • Outdoor learning workshops or family-friendly nature exploration activities
  • Small pop-up events, encouraging imaginary play or creative engagement with natural elements
  • Youth programs focused on nature discovery, ecology, conservation or environmental stewardship.
  • Inter-generational activities connecting community members to nature and one another.

“Nature play opportunities allow young people to disconnect from screens, build meaningful connections and enjoy free play in their natural environment. These sensory experiences are vital to healthy child development and contribute to their social, physical and mental well-being,” said Boulder Parks and Recreation Planning Senior Manager, Mark Davison.

Applications are now open on the city’s program webpage through Sunday, Feb. 1. Applicants are encouraged to review the Nature Exploration Park Facilitators Agreement before submitting proposals. Selected programs will be notified no later than Friday, Feb. 13.

Continuation of the program will be determined after the 2026 pilot is reviewed. Application details and additional information can be located on the Boulder Parks and Recreation program webpage.
