Bundles of yarn on sale

When Art Parts Creative Reuse Center was founded in Boulder in 2011, it joined the ranks of several other reuse centers throughout the country. Over the years, Art Parts has continued to grow into a unique retail space that enhances community access to art materials. Supplies that might be thrown away can instead be donated to the store, where they are refreshed and sold at an affordable rate. Since opening, Art Parts has diverted almost 400,000 pounds of art materials from landfills.

“I feel strongly that everyone is an artist,” said Megan Moriarty, Executive Director. “If you create something with your hands, you are a maker. Art Parts gives more members of our community the opportunity to experiment with art. We also provide people with a place to sustainably get rid of supplies that are no longer wanted. Maybe you are moving or cleaning out your grandma’s sewing closet. Perhaps you picked up watercolors during the pandemic and have now found other hobbies. Bring your materials to us and we can reimagine them into new supplies for others.”

For Moriarty, Boulder is the perfect place for Art Parts because of the city’s creativity and commitment to sustainability. “People in Boulder are aware of the environmental impact of what they purchase. It’s also a city that is home to many artisans and makers who teach others their craft. Our arts community thrives because we help one another. Whether it’s passing down a skill or sharing news by word of mouth – like how to support our organization – Boulder’s tight-knit arts community is integral to our success.”

Art Parts receives general operating support grant funding from the Boulder Arts Commission. For anyone thinking about applying for a grant opportunity, Moriarty advises spending time to figure out which resource is right for your work. “As our store was expanding over the past three years, we knew we need continuous funding. Our grant lasts for multiple years, which makes the time put into the application up front extremely worth it. It’s important to explore the best grant for your needs before investing in the process.”
