Water Quality Results

The city goes above and beyond regulatory requirements, monitoring for 500+ water quality substances, including basic chemistry, nutrients, bacteria, metals, disinfection byproducts, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, hormones, radionuclides, and PFAS. All drinking water, including bottled water, contains substances that do not necessarily pose health risks and the vast majority of these substances are not detected in the city’s drinking water.

  • mg/L: milligrams per liter.
  • ug/L: micrograms per liter.
  • ntu: Nephalometric turbidity units
  • µmho/cm: micromhos per centimeter
  • <: Concentration below the detection limit

How small is that?

For scale, 1 mg/L is equivalent to 1 drop in a 10-gallon aquarium. 1 ug/L is equivalent to 1 drop in a 10,000-gallon swimming pool.

Types of State and Federal Standards

  • Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest concentration allowed in drinking water.
  • Maximum Secondary Level (MSL): A non-enforceable concentration set to minimize taste and odor or discoloration.
  • Treatment Technique (TT): A required treatment process intended to reduce the concentration in drinking water.
  • Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant that, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow.
  • Running Annual Average (RAA): The average of results for samples collected at a particular monitoring location during the most recent four calendar quarters.
