Additional Victims/Witnesses Sought in Attacks

BOULDER, Colo. – Boulder Police detectives are looking for additional witnesses and victims who may have been attacked by a man last night.

During the incident, two community members and three Boulder Police officers were assaulted. Detectives would like to speak to anyone who might have witnessed this incident or anyone else that this suspect might have come into contact with in the area last night.

Just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, officers were called to the intersection of 30th and Aurora streets for a report of a person lying in the road. As they were responding, additional calls came in for a disturbance and assault at the same location.

Before officers arrived, the male suspect assaulted and strangled a passerby. When officers arrived and attempted to take the suspect into custody for the strangulation, he immediately began fighting with them. The suspect then grabbed and assaulted a UPS driver who attempted to help officers. The suspect then lunged for one of the officer’s guns and bit the officer’s hand when she refused to let it go.

Officers used less-lethal devices to try to subdue the suspect, but they had no effect. The suspect then kicked another officer in the head and punched him repeatedly in the face, causing a concussion. The officers suffered significant injuries in attempting to subdue and arrest the suspect before he could cause additional harm to community members.

The suspect, Perry Gilreath, 18, has been charged with:

• 1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer
• 2nd Degree Assault/Attempting to disarm a Peace Officer
• 2nd Degree Assault on the passerby
• 3rd Degree Assault on the UPS driver
• Obstructing / Resisting Arrest

In court today he was given a $100,000 cash or surety bond.

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
