Boulder has always been a city that values its natural surroundings, from the Flatirons rising above us to the pollinators buzzing through our neighborhoods.

Now, that deep connection to nature is taking on a global dimension. During this year’s Pollinator Appreciation Month, the City of Boulder officially signed the Berlin Urban Nature Pact, joining cities around the world in a shared commitment to restore and protect urban nature by 2030.

The Berlin Urban Nature Pact is more than a pledge; it’s a call to action. Cities that sign on are part of a growing global community dedicated to reversing biodiversity loss and helping nature recover in urban environments. They work together to make nature a central part of urban life and part of our daily lives. By sharing ideas and learning from one another, these cities are working to turn Nature-based Solutions from abstract concepts into real, tangible projects that benefit both people and the planet.

For Boulder, this global commitment builds on decades of local work to protect open space, restore ecosystems and bring nature into our city. It aligns with our ongoing efforts to integrate nature into climate action: from restoring native habitats and improving soil health to designing greener, cooler more resilient neighborhoods.

“Boulder has long understood that our well-being is intertwined with the health of the natural world,” said Jonathan Koehn. “By joining the Berlin Urban Nature Pact, we’re taking that understanding to the global stage by collaborating with other cities to learn, share and take action so that both people and nature can thrive together.”

Being part of the pact means Boulder will continue setting measurable goals to strengthen biodiversity and enhance our city’s resilience. As we look ahead, this partnership reminds us of something simple but powerful: nature is everywhere. It’s in our parks, our creeks, our gardens and our neighborhoods. And when we nurture it, we help heal our community and the planet we all share.
