Projects will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Street Mall

The City of Boulder invites Colorado artists and artist teams to apply for the 2027 Experiments in Public Art Program, which supports projects that expand the possibilities of public art through experimentation, unconventional approaches and community engagement. Unlike traditional public art commissions, the program encourages artists to test new ideas and explore how art can change the way people experience public space.

In August 2027, Boulder will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Street Mall. The anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the Mall’s history, what makes it special and how it might evolve over the next 50 years. Projects funded through the 2027 Experiments in Public Art Program must focus on the Pearl Street Mall and its 50th anniversary. Artists and artist teams may apply for up to $9,500 in funding.

“Everyone in Boulder has a Pearl Street story. This anniversary is a chance for artists to create new ones, through work that surprises people, invites them in and gets them talking about what the next 50 years could hold,” said Lauren Click, Office of Arts and Culture manager. “We’re excited to see how creatives help spark that conversation.”

Projects must take place in a free, publicly accessible or publicly viewable space along the Pearl Street Mall and last at least one weekend and no more than three months. Experiential projects, such as performances, pop-ups and flash mobs, must occur at least three times within a period of no more than three months.

Applications are open through 5 p.m. on Nov. 16, 2026. For eligibility requirements and application details, visit the Experiments in Public Art call for artists webpage.
