Purpose

The Landmarks Board consists of five City Council-appointed members, who serve five-year terms. The Board includes at least two representatives from the architecture or urban planning professions. The Landmarks Board also includes a single nonvoting member from the Planning Board who attends meetings and comments on historic preservation issues that may have larger planning implications. The board fulfills three major roles, including making recommendation on proposed landmarks and historic districts, review of exterior changes to designated properties and review of demolition applications for non-designated buildings over 50 years old. The board also has the authority to make rules and regulations to interpret the ordinance.

The board meets the first Wednesday of the month, and board members rotate on the weekly Landmarks Design Review Committee on Wednesday mornings. Members of the Landmarks Board and staff attend conferences, forums and workshops annually to increase current knowledge that will assist in the board’s operation. As Boulder property values and development pressures continue to rise, the board is increasingly faced with more complex issues that require balancing community interests when making decisions regarding designation, design review, and demolitions.

Time commitment

Are you able to make the required monthly time commitment of 16-24 hours per month? This consists of:

  • A weekly Landmarks Design Review Committee meeting (Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. – rotating with other board members), and
  • Time for reading, research, and staying in touch with what is going on (typically via email/phone calls).
