Update on Armed Incident
BOULDER, Colo. – At approximately 11:36 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, Boulder Police received a call about a welfare check for a man in crisis with a gun threatening to shoot himself and others.
At 1:38 p.m., the University of Colorado Boulder Police received a call from someone who saw a gun fall out of the pants of a man walking on campus. That man then put the gun back in his pants and ran away. The witness said the man then got in a car and drove away.
CUPD issued a shelter in place and officers began searching the area for the suspect.
Boulder Police and CUPD officers connected the two calls and gathered additional information to tentatively identify the suspect. The initial information officers received indicated the suspect was armed with a gun and that he was looking for a woman with whom he used to be in a relationship. As this incident unfolded, officers became aware that this suspect had an active domestic violence protection order.
Officers searched multiple locations in the city and just after 3 p.m., they spotted the suspect’s car. They coordinated to safely immobilize his car on 40th Street just north of Table Mesa Drive in south Boulder. The suspect refused to drop a gun he was holding.
Boulder Police SWAT was activated and for more than four hours, officers talked with the suspect, trying to persuade him to drop the gun and surrender peacefully. Unfortunately, at approximately 7:15 p.m. while they were trying to negotiate with him, the suspect committed suicide. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will identify the suspect and notify the next of kin.
This investigation remains ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Boulder Police Tipline 303-441-1974 reference case 25-1695.
