Robert Holland

Robert Holland's family moved to Boulder in 1969. His three brothers and grandmother were artists, and he possessed some inherent artistic skills. He dabbled in art throughout his early adult life but didn’t fully explore his artistic potential until the early '90s when he took up watercolor painting. It became almost an obsession, as he put brush to paper nearly every day for five years. He was very good, feeling inspired and proud of the works he created. Then, he stopped almost as abruptly as he had started. For the next 25 years, he spent no more than a few hours a year creating art.

Four years ago, he received a call from a friend who offered him a partnership in a program the friend had started with Thistle Community Housing. The organization wanted to beautify its properties with murals. Thistle is an amazing asset to Boulder County, not only helping people thrive instead of just surviving but also creating communities. With every project he worked on, he met community members who were intrigued by the art. Residents would ask questions, engage in conversations, and later return to check on the progress. They were always friendly and appreciative of the artwork he was creating for their community. It has become a very rewarding job for him.
