Welcome!

Understanding your wildfire risk is the first step toward making your home and property more resilient. Whether you are new to wildfire preparedness or looking to make additional improvements, the City of Boulder offers tools and resources to help you understand potential vulnerabilities, explore wildfire risk in your area and identify practical steps you can take.

Understand Where You Live

Boulder's Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) includes areas where homes and development meet or mix with wildland vegetation. Understanding the WUI can help you learn more about wildfire considerations in your neighborhood.

Explore the city's WUI map to see how your property relates to these areas. Remember, wildfire risk exists beyond mapped boundaries, and all Boulder residents can take steps to reduce their vulnerability.

Below is our Wildland Urban Interface Risk Index. The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Risk Index is a tool the city uses to better understand wildfire risk across Boulder neighborhoods and identify where mitigation efforts can make the greatest difference.

It looks at several factors, including how likely a wildfire is to occur, how intensely it could burn, how easily it could reach a neighborhood and how vulnerable homes may be.

The Risk Index helps the city prioritize wildfire mitigation projects, resources and planning efforts. It also helps community members better understand the wildfire risks in their neighborhoods and what contributes to those risks.

Understand Your Home’s Vulnerabilities

Every home is different, and wildfire risk depends on more than where your property is located. Building materials, landscaping, surrounding vegetation and maintenance can all affect how vulnerable your home may be.

Boulder Fire-Rescue's Detailed Home Assessment (DHA) program helps property owners identify potential vulnerabilities and understand which improvements to prioritize. A DHA provides property-specific recommendations to help you make informed decisions about wildfire mitigation.
