A small group of coworkers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder began a tradition in that would last for decades. They started working out together at the South Boulder Rec Center, initially joking that you needed a PhD in meteorology just to join in. What began as a tight-knit group of scientists and researchers gradually grew into a diverse community, welcoming people from all walks of life.
Today, the group spans generations, with members ranging from their early 50s to their late 80s. They gather three times a week, pushing each other to stay fit with weightlifting, cardio and aerobics. For the older, retired members, it's about more than just exercise, it's a way to stay connected to their community, improve balance and flexibility and maintain their fitness well into their golden years.
Along the way, the group has fostered lifelong friendships. One member even met his wife through the workouts. Their bond extends beyond the gym, with an annual Christmas party and regular post-workout beer meetups. The health benefits have been undeniable, with members enjoying better sleep, lower stress and an overall improved experience of aging. And if someone misses a session, it’s not long before the group checks in to make sure everything is okay.
This tight-knit community has created something truly special at Boulder Parks and Rec, where they’ve felt like family for 45 years. The staff know them by name, and the warm welcome they receive each time they walk through the door makes it feel like home. It’s a place where fitness and friendship come together, and the group continues to thrive, stronger and more connected than ever.
If you're not already a member of Boulder Parks and Rec, now’s the perfect time to join and discover your own fitness community.
