Stepping On: Fall Prevention Series

This seven-week series is based on behavior change and prevention, focusing on balance and strength exercises, medication review, vision review and home modifications. Participants will learn to build and maintain the physical strength and balance to walk confidently, what may increase the risk of a fall and how to avoid it, and how to make an individualized fall prevention action plan. Instructors: Injury prevention professionals from Boulder Fire-Rescue, Boulder Community Health and Intermountain Health.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a practice of encouraging attention to the present moment. By allowing for awareness of what is most present now, participants will develop the capacity for increased focus, openness, and peace. Each session will include a guided meditation, with emphasis on bringing purposeful and kind attention to the experience, followed by time for reflections and questions about the practice. Beginners and experienced meditators welcome. Facilitator: Kara Traikoff is the Wellness Program Specialist with Boulder County Area Agency on Aging. She has a background in offering Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and adapted mindfulness courses.

Strength and Alignment

Using breath for increased self-awareness, this chair fitness class focuses on body alignment to increase bone density without injury by using resistance training with hand-held weights, resistance bands and isometric exercises using balls. Core strength is emphasized in all movements. This class includes a cardiovascular warm-up, a relaxing cool-down, and constant attention to balance. Exercises can be done standing or seated in a chair, all levels welcome. Instructor: Judy Kreith.

NEW! Qi Gong

In traditional Chinese culture, the circulation of blood and vital energies can decrease as one ages causing stiffness in the body and other potential health issues. This class will focus on simple, yet effective Qi Gong exercises to re-establish strong circulation and retrain the nervous system while improving range of movement, balance, and reinvigorating all major body systems, creating a general sense of well-being. This class can be done standing or seated in a chair, all levels welcome.
Instructor: Craig Barnes has been practicing, teaching, and training instructors in Qi Gong and Tai Chi for 40 years. His primary focus is in using Qi practices for healing, meditation, and elevating the spirit.

CU Physiology of Aging Information Table and Complimentary Blood Pressure Check

CU Physiology of Aging Lab conducts research on the effects of different lifestyle interventions on heart health and brain function in older adults (50+). CU Lab staff will be available to explain the different studies to older adults who may be interested in volunteering for a study. CU Boulder Physiology of Aging Clinical Trials: From Initial Insights to Impact

CU Boulder’s Integrative Physiology of Aging (IPA) Lab researches lifestyle interventions to maintain and improve cardiovascular health throughout the lifespan. Researchers will present findings from past studies that have informed current National Institute of Health funded trials. Attendees will learn about the established and potential impacts of MitoQ (an antioxidant), Fisetin (a compound found in strawberries), heat therapy, and inspiratory muscle strength training on blood vessel and brain function. Presenters: Dr. Brendan Kaiser, Staff Scientist and Bri Astorino, BS, Masters Student. The IPA Lab researches lifestyle interventions to maintain and improve cardiovascular health throughout the lifespan.

Plant Forward Boulder

Plant Forward Boulder is part of Building Healthy Communities (BHC) of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). BHCs support healthy, plant-based lifestyles by nurturing local connections, facilitating ongoing social support, and providing educational programming. Each month attendees will learn about important topics in lifestyle medicine. Instructor: Ann Thomasset holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition through eCornell, and is a BHC leader with PCRM.

The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education® helps participants learn to move with ease using slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful results in terms of balance, flexibility, and coordination. Feldenkrais relates directly to functional movements of daily life and an improved sense of grounding, walking and support. Lessons will be done seated, standing, and lying on a mat. The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of living. Increase ease and range of motion, improve flexibility and coordination, and rediscover an innate capacity for graceful and efficient movement. By improving quality of movement, unnecessary muscular tensions throughout the body can reorganize and release. Participants will walk, stand, or sit in a chair, and also lie on the floor in a variety of comfortable positions on the back, front, or side. For both new and more experienced players. Learn croquet rules, techniques, and strategies using state-of-the-art equipment in the park near East Age Well Center.
Playing croquet can help improve eye-hand coordination, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills, all while enjoying a fun outdoor game. Interact with others, engage in friendly competition, and build relationships through shared experiences. Shelter with seating is provided and a bathroom with water fountain is nearby; please bring a hat, water bottle, and sunscreen. Participants are welcome to bring a folding chair, if desired. Join instructor, Todd Marshall, Boulder LongGrass Croquet’s founder, for lessons and games of 9-Wicket ‘Backyard’ Croquet and 6-Wicket Golf Croquet.
