Swallowing Made Simple – Tips for Easier and Safer Eating

Breast Cancer and Osteoporosis

This class will review strategies to decrease the chance of developing breast cancer, how to prevent fractures, and additional time for Q&A on both topics. Instructor: Dr. Kallos has practiced medicine since 1970, was founder and director of the Breast Health Center and Diagnostic Ultrasound in Florida, and Associate Director of the Women’s Breast Center at University of Miami.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a practice of encouraging attention to the present moment. By allowing for awareness of what is most present now, participants will develop the capacity for increased focus, openness, and peace. Each session will include a guided meditation, with emphasis on bringing purposeful and kind attention to the experience, followed by time for reflections and questions about the practice. Beginners and experienced meditators welcome. Facilitator: Kara Traikoff is the Wellness Program Specialist with Boulder County Area Agency on Aging. She has a background in offering Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and adapted mindfulness courses.

Mindfulness/Awareness Meditation Series

“Doing nothing properly” is another description for meditation practice, which is the act of taking a good posture while sitting, practicing a simple technique, and gently synchronizing the body and mind to settle together. This series will present the age-old practices of sitting and walking meditation. Beginners and experienced meditators welcome. Roland Cohen has practiced meditation since 1972 and has taught meditation practice throughout the USA and other countries.

Plant Forward Boulder

Plant Forward Boulder is part of Building Healthy Communities (BHC) of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. BHCs support healthy, plant-based lifestyles by
nurturing local connections, facilitating ongoing social support, and providing educational programming. Each month attendees will learn about important topics in lifestyle medicine.
Instructor: Ann Thomasset holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition through eCornell, and is a BHC leader with PCRM.

CU Physiology of Aging Information Table and Complimentary Blood Pressure Check

CU Physiology of Aging Lab conducts research on the effects of different lifestyle interventions on heart health and brain function in older adults. CU Lab staff will be available to explain the different studies to older adults who may be interested in volunteering for a study. Introduction to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

As aromatherapy gains popularity and use, it is important to know some of the basics of essential oil use. This promotes maximum benefit and safety. Essential oils can be used at home with a minimum of education. Instructor: Dale Parker has worked as a counselor and health educator in infectious disease and addiction, and is currently a practicing, certified aromatherapist.

Ukemi: The Art of Falling Safely

In Japanese martial arts, ukemi translates to "receiving body" or "receiving technique" and refers to the art of falling safely. Falls are a leading cause of injury across all demographics. In this class, older adults will learn the principles of falling without injury. After finding center through meditation and Japanese yoga, participants will warm up the body with light core exercises and stretches, then practice safe falling on a forgiving matted surface. Registrants must complete a pre-screening tool prior to participation. Instructor: Randy Thompson, 3rd degree black belt in Aikido.
