Boulder Police Department Accepting Applications for Victim Advocate Positions

BOULDER, Colo. – We’re looking for caring and empathetic individuals to serve as volunteer victim advocates in our community.

The Boulder Police Department has several openings for volunteer victim advocates who may respond to incident scenes to work with victims of crimes, accidents, crashes, natural disasters and other critical events. They provide services that include providing information, emotional support, and referrals to other local resources.

Advocates say that being able to support people through their worst days gives them a sense of connection and purpose, and the feedback we receive is that our services are absolutely critical for helping victims during their time of need.

Requirements to be a volunteer victim advocate include:

• Must be at least 21 years old

• Must be able to work one shift per month

• Required to attend a 40-hour training session

• One-year commitment to the program

Victim Advocates at the Boulder Police Department volunteer their time and are on call for one shift per month.

There are three on-call shifts available:

1. Dayshift is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday;

2. Nightshift is from 6 p.m. – 6 a.m., Monday through Friday;

3. Weekend shift is 6p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.

Victim advocate training will run from April 15th through May 3rd and will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m.- 4p.m. The training sessions will cover crisis intervention, community resources, active listening, and emotional responses to grief and trauma.
