Today, the City of Boulder will be conducting prescribed pile burns in southeast Boulder, specifically south of Highway 36 and east of Cherryvale Road. Boulder community members may notice smoke coming from the area but should not call 911 on these pile burns as they are not an emergency.

Burn ignition will begin after 10:30 a.m. and will end prior to 3 p.m. Community members may continue to see smoke past 3 p.m. as the fire crews work on extinguishing the pile burns.

Boulder prescribed fire crews are using today because of the good conditions and snowfall. A pile burn is the burning of collected branches and debris from clearing open space. Burning them in conditions like today and in piles reduces the risk of wildfire.

The city encourages all community members to clean up debris such as pine needles, branches, and leaves from around their property to create better defensible space against wildfires. Please use a green waste disposal opportunity to get rid of the debris from your private property.

Boulder Fire-Rescue works in partnership with Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks as well as the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office when planning and conducting prescribed burns like these. Read more about city prescribed burns at https://bouldercolorado.gov/services/prescribed-burning
