Temporary events in Boulder have different requirements depending on the location. This guide will help you determine which application process applies to your event.

Temporary Outdoor Event - Tent or Generator

Application Requirements

  1. Permit Exceptions

    The following is a list of tents that are exempt from permit. If your tent exceeds the threshold below, you will need to apply for a permit.

    • Tents – with walls
      • Not exceeding 400 square feet
    • Tents – open on all sides
      • Not exceeding 700 square feet
      • Multiple open tents placed side by side, not exceeding 700 square feet

  • Applicants may be required to submit additional information as necessary to clearly demonstrate compliance with all applicable codes.
  • Please be advised that incomplete applications or plans that do not meet the submittal requirements will not be accepted for review.

Temporary Indoor Event - Change of Occupancy

Application Requirements

Eligibility is limited to building occupancy types A (assembly) and M (mercantile); other occupancy types will need to apply for a Tenant Improvement building permit through the standard building process.

  • Floorplans of existing and proposed conditions created and stamped by a design professional that also show the fire suppression system, egress, and discharge.
  • Occupancy load calculations and confirmation of any fire watch requirements.
  • Plumbing Fixture Count form
  • Flame certificates for any fabric, foam, or other flammable materials that are being put in the building.

    The following is a list of building types that are exempt from permit. If your building does not meet the criteria below, you will need to apply for a permit.

    • Existing Assembly occupancies with no change in occupant load and no interior finishes
