Bridge project paired with pavement repair for cost and time efficiencies

In observance of Independence Day, the City of Boulder is adjusting its operations schedules for July 3 and 4.
The City of Boulder will repair the 6th Street Bridge just south of Canyon Boulevard, a timely project crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the bridge. Bridge work will be paired with scheduled pavement maintenance as part of the annual Pavement Management Program. Construction is scheduled for daytime hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Saturday, June 28, with a full bridge closure anticipated to last two weeks, pending weather.
While the bridge typically experiences relatively low traffic volumes, the city and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) are coordinating detours to ensure adequate traffic flow in the area as nearby state pavement rehabilitation work on Canyon Boulevard continues. Temporary impacts include:
- A road closure on 6th Street from Arapahoe Avenue to Canyon Boulevard with a vehicle, bike and pedestrian detour to the east on 9th Street.
- Access will be maintained to the Justice Center Parking Lot, with some parking spots designated for construction activities.
- After the road closure is complete, repairs will continue underneath the bridge for the rest of the project’s month-long duration. During this time, the multi-use path will close temporarily, with a detour above to the pedestrian crossing just north of the bridge, where a new pedestrian refuge island was installed earlier this spring to support safer crossings.
Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and remain alert for changing conditions. If weather conditions delay construction, work may transition to a single-lane closure during work hours, with flaggers guiding traffic. Detours will be coordinated with CDOT to avoid extended travel impacts as state pavement work continues along Canyon Boulevard.
“The city is committed to maximizing the lifespan of over 300 miles of roads, bridges and paths while spending long-term maintenance funds as efficiently as possible. Our strategy to accomplish this is to schedule repairs around the lifecycle of critical infrastructure,” said Principal Transportation Projects Engineer Gerrit Slatter. “We thank our community for their patience and understanding as we work to ensure their safe travels in Boulder.”
