Statement related to the tragic death of Jesus Lopez Barcenas on Dec. 27, 2024
BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder Fire-Rescue acknowledges the seriousness of the findings released by Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty regarding the tragic death of Jesus Lopez Barcenas on Dec. 27, 2024. Our hearts are with all those affected by the loss of Mr. Barcenas.
As an all-hazards response agency, Boulder Fire-Rescue is dedicated to protecting and serving the community with care, professionalism, and integrity in line with Boulder County Protocols and National Standards. All Boulder Fire-Rescue personnel are certified emergency medical technicians, and some are licensed paramedics, trained to provide advanced life support.
On Dec. 27, 2024, the University of Colorado Police Department was the primary law enforcement agency initially responding to the call. Boulder Fire-Rescue was requested to assist after the call had been active for some time. Upon arrival, our personnel provided medical care to an injured police officer. Care for that officer was later transferred to American Medical Response (AMR), the city’s contracted ambulance provider. All medical decisions and transport for Mr. Barcenas were carried out solely by AMR personnel.
“Although some time has passed since the incident, the death of Mr. Barcenas remains a deeply tragic outcome. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they continue to endure this loss,” said Jenna Steege, Division Chief of EMS for Boulder Fire-Rescue. “As part of our standard continuous quality improvement process, Boulder Fire-Rescue’s involvement was reviewed to ensure alignment with our EMS operational expectations and responsibilities. AMR management conducted their own internal review of the Dec. 27, 2024, incident and informed me that it resulted in the termination of one of their employees.”
We recognize the gravity of the district attorney’s findings and the lasting impact of this incident on our community. Boulder Fire-Rescue remains committed to transparency, accountability, and upholding the public’s trust in our emergency medical services.
