The City of Boulder is accepting applications for new panel members to serve on the Police Oversight Panel (“Panel”). Established in 2020, Boulder’s Police Oversight Panel reviews complaint investigation cases and makes disciplinary, policy, and training recommendations to the Boulder Police Department. To identify new members, an Advisory Committee composed of community members and representatives from various community organizations will be created and will recommend applicants for appointment by the City Manager.

The City of Boulder invites all community members who have strong ties to the city of Boulder, the ability to understand community concerns, and commitment to the purposes of the Police Oversight ordinance to consider applying to serve on the Panel. Residency in the city of Boulder is not required.

Service on the Panel will entail a significant time investment and require regular attendance at monthly meetings, participation in full case file reviews and discussions, service on a panel subcommittee, and participation in regular and mandatory training sessions. Panel members should expect to dedicate approximately 10-15 hours of service per month to the work on the panel duties and responsibilities. Panel members will receive a stipend of $200 per month.

The Panel is committed to independently analyzing and evaluating community complaints of alleged police misconduct to assist in providing equitable outcomes and restoring community trust in the Boulder Police Department. Diverse representation of the Boulder community is the cornerstone of the Panel’s work, bringing historically excluded voices to the forefront of civilian police oversight.

The application period will be open from December 15, 2023 – January 6, 2024, and interviews will be held on January 20 and January 24, 2024. The three-year or two-year term of service will begin in February 2024. Panel members may serve for a maximum of two consecutive terms, for a total of four years.
