Boulder Fire-Rescue (BFR) announced today that, following a competitive request for proposals (RFP) process, the City of Boulder has entered into a new contract with Falck Rocky Mountain to provide ambulance transport services beginning Jan. 1, 2026. The partnership ensures seamless, high-quality emergency medical service for Boulder residents as the city’s contract with American Medical Response (AMR) concludes on Dec. 31, 2025.
Falck Rocky Mountain, part of Falck, a global emergency medical services leader operating in more than 25 countries, brings extensive experience serving Front Range communities. Known for clinician-focused patient care, reliable response performance, and deep partnerships with fire agencies, Falck’s EMTs and paramedics operate with modern vehicles, advanced medical technology, and robust quality improvement systems.
The City of Boulder issued its RFP in July 2025 and selected Falck in September. With the contract now officially signed as of Nov. 26, Boulder Fire-Rescue highlighted that residents can expect uninterrupted, high-quality ambulance coverage, with Falck required to staff and operate Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances 24/7. These units will be fully aligned with BFR operations to maintain a cohesive, integrated emergency response system. The contract with Falck also secures service for three years, with the opportunity to extend the contract by one year, for up to two years.
“As we prepare for Falck to begin service in Boulder on January 1, our priority is ensuring continuity and the highest level of emergency medical care for our community. Falck was selected through a comprehensive, competitive procurement process and has demonstrated strong alignment with Boulder’s operational needs and expectations,” said Jenna Steege, EMS Division Chief with Boulder Fire-Rescue. “I’m encouraged by the collaborative approach Falck has brought to this transition. They’ve been proactive, engaged, and committed to ensuring we are fully prepared for day one. I also want to acknowledge and thank AMR for their years of service to the City of Boulder. Our focus now is on supporting a smooth, seamless transition for the community members and visitors of our city.”
A cornerstone of the new agreement is the strong operational integration between Falck and Boulder Fire-Rescue. Falck Ambulance personnel will work under BFR’s medical direction, protocols, and oversight. Boulder Fire-Rescue Firefighter-Paramedics will be able to continue patient care inside Falck owned ambulances and transport to the hospital. Falck will also participate in joint training, and ongoing quality-improvement initiatives—ensuring Boulder community members and visitors receive care from a single, coordinated emergency medical system.
Falck leaders expressed enthusiasm about serving the Boulder community. “We are honored to be trusted with the opportunity to provide emergency ambulance service for the City of Boulder,” said David Patterson, Regional Managing Director at Falck USA. “Boulder is a vibrant and beautiful community, and our selection to serve Boulder is a direct reflection of the exemplary service provided by the EMS and healthcare professionals in our existing Colorado operations in Aurora."
Additional information about the transition to Falck Rocky Mountain will be shared as the city shifts to this service.
