The City of Boulder Fire-Rescue’s Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Team is celebrating a major milestone: 1,000 detailed home assessments (DHAs) on 1,000 individual properties since the program’s official launch in November 2023. This November (2025), the team completed its 1,000th DHA, a moment that reflects the city’s commitment to wildfire preparedness and community safety.
Since the program’s beginning two years ago it has helped hundreds of residents take concrete steps toward wildfire readiness and neighborhood resilience. “Every DHA is a chance to partner with our community – it is great that of all of the DHAs that have been completed so far, 84% have taken place in Boulder’s highest risk areas (the Wildland Urban Interface – WUI)” said David Lowrey, Community Risk Reduction Division Chief. “From home hardening to defensible space, we work with residents to help protect homes and neighborhoods.”
Each DHA is a dedicated two-hour, one-on-one visit between a CRR specialist and a homeowner and their specific property. During this visit, a CRR specialist evaluates home vulnerabilities, provides tailored recommendations for fire and hazard resilience, and guides residents on creating more resilient properties. On average, team members spend about three hours on each individual detailed home assessment, the report generated, and providing specific case-by-case feedback to residents.
“This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our residents and our CRR team,” said Michael Calderazzo, Boulder Fire-Rescue Chief. “Creating a more wildfire ready community is a cross-departmental, community wide effort, and we are lucky to be here in Boulder where much of our community is willing to take up the task.”
