Expect temporary delays, closures and detours beginning in mid-August
The City of Boulder is replacing the deteriorating wooden pedestrian and bike bridge deck at Arapahoe Avenue over South Boulder Creek, between Old Tale Road and Cherryvale Road. The new bridge will include an upgrade to a concrete deck for a safer, smoother and quieter ride.
Construction is anticipated to begin on Aug. 11, 2026, and last about 2 months, pending weather and contractor availability. Work will primarily be during daytime hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local and business access will remain open, and those impacted have received advance notice. Visit Cone Zones for a map and updates.
When driving, expect:
- Periodic delays and flaggers guiding traffic during daytime lane closures.
- Two separate, full nighttime closures of westbound vehicle lanes near the impacted location during safety-critical work. There will be advance notice as construction progresses and dates are determined. Vehicle detours will be via 63rd Street to Valmont Road and Cherryvale Road to Baseline Road.
When walking or biking, travelers can expect:
- The South Boulder Creek Trail underpass beneath the bridge will remain open throughout construction, except during safety-critical operations. Traffic control will assist travelers through the construction zone during these intermittent underpass closures.
- A detour for biking and walking along Arapahoe Avenue to Cherryvale Road.
When taking the bus, riders can expect:
- Bus Stop 12231 at Arapahoe Avenue & Cherryvale Road (WB) will be closed. Take the bus at nearby Stop 12243 at Arapahoe Avenue & Old Tale Road.
While the city works to coordinate nearby construction efforts to shorten timelines for fewer disruptions to community travel wherever possible, bridge work could not be combined with other projects completed earlier in the year due to manufacturing delays for bridge materials.
