In partnership with Downtown Boulder Partnership and Novaby, community members are invited to take an adventure through a brand new self-guided augmented reality (AR) tour of the downtown district and Civic Area - near the library - this winter season! From Sunday, Nov. 20 through Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, meet snowmen, penguins, gingerbread people and more on the Snow Much Fun Virtual (AR) Experiences self-guided tour.
Outdoor signage will point visitors to scan QR codes on each block of the Pearl Street Mall, as well as on the East End and West End districts and throughout the Civic Area near the library to access fun filters via Instagram. Participants will need to have the latest version of Instagram downloaded on their phone to access the AR.
Participate by scanning the QR Code on signage using a phone camera. Instagram will open automatically. Place the content in the preferred location by tapping a horizontal surface on the phone screen. Scale or rotate content as desired using a two-finger pinch or twist gesture. Community members can then walk around the content to experience it in 3D.
Downtown Boulder is excited to bring these new experiential activations to the downtown district to help connect the Civic Area with the downtown core. There will be five activations around the Boulder Public Library area and six along Pearl Street.
- View a map of the winter wonderland AR trail and follow along on each block!
West End: Start on the West End to meet Bumble hiding behind a pine tree - we promise he is friendly! A little bit shy, Bumble likes to stay close to his tree for protection. But if you ask nicely for a photo, he might let you take one!
1100 Block: On the 1100 block of Pearl Street, encounter a family of friendly polar bears hanging out on an iceberg. Scale their size with your fingertips and hop in for some family photos!
1200 Block: Next, head to the 1200 block to meet the Breaking Bread gingerbread dance team. With moves that can't be missed, record a video and join in the fun!
1300 Block: Keep going to the 1300 block to cool off (or warm up) in an igloo beach portal. Walk through the door (literally walk forward when you pull up the filter) and meet some relaxed penguins. Kick back in this island oasis and stay awhile!
1400 Block: Continue to the 1400 block of the Pearl Street Mall to find Jack Frost's friend, Snowy kARen. Bundled for cold weather, this frosty snow girl is a great wintertime companion.
1500 Block of the East End: Find a cheerful snowman - Jack Frost - on the 1500 block of the East End! Perfect for posing with friends.
Arapahoe Ave. entrance of Boulder Library: Head to the Civic Area near the Arapahoe Ave. entrance of the Boulder Public Library to find an artful snowflake that will delight visitors as it morphs from one shape to another.
Canyon side of Boulder Creek: On the Canyon Street side of the creek, a Nosey nARwhal will surprise visitors as he pokes his head in and out of the icy arctic waters to say hello.
East lawn by Boulder Creek: Head down to the east lawn to a snowy forest that shows the full magic and power of augmented reality. Visitors can walk around and in between the trees.
East toward the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building: From the forest, head east toward the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building. Visitors will experience the beauty of winter and humor of nature with the playfully created “mARch of the penguins” as they make their way into and out of the water.
Across the bridge toward the Main Library’s entrance: Twinkle Toes will skate her way into your holiday and heart. She has a special talent for leaving hidden holiday wishes in the ice as she executes her spins with ease.
