Project part of multi-decade planning on one of Boulder's most heavily traveled corridors

Travelers in Boulder can now use new curbside lanes dedicated to buses and right-turning vehicles on east Arapahoe Avenue (CO 7) between 28th and 63rd streets. This project is another step toward delivering on the goals of the East Arapahoe Transportation Plan (EATP), a long-term plan leading into 2040 that aims to respond to changing travel needs along this corridor, which has become one of Boulder’s most heavily traveled streets, a key employment center, and a home to many.

The upgraded lanes have red markings and signage like other bus and turn lanes in the city and function as right-turn-only lanes, except for buses. Merging over the solid white line is permitted. When making a right turn from Arapahoe Avenue into an intersection or driveway, people driving may use the curbside lane. To turn right onto Arapahoe Avenue, yield to all other travelers and turn into the through lane when safe to do so.

These changes on Arapahoe Avenue support more efficient travel flow by repurposing limited roadway space previously used by only 14-25% of through traffic. The new bus and turn lanes will also improve travel for all by:

  • Speeding up transit travel times while supporting reliable travel times for people driving.
  • Reducing vehicle conflicts with the bus.
  • Making turning right into intersections and into driveways easier and safer, improving access to businesses along the street.

As more people move along this corridor, the city and its regional partners are taking action to ensure people have safe, reliable and convenient travel options now and into the future. This East Arapahoe Bus and Turn Lanes Signing & Striping Project was a joint effort coordinated with Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) resurfacing work to help lessen taxpayer costs and shorten construction timelines for fewer disruptions to community travel.
