Affordable housing is a vital component of a thriving community. Research shows that stable, affordable housing is crucial to a community's health, environment and overall well-being.
Over the years, Jeni Bough became increasingly concerned about housing affordability in Boulder. This year, she took the step to ensure that her home will remain affordable for future generations by donating her home to the city’s Housing Legacy Program.
Jeni moved to Colorado in the late 1970s and after a few years in the mountains, she set down roots in Boulder because of the proximity to the mountains and Denver, and the vibrant atmosphere. But as the population of Boulder continued to grow, Jeni witnessed firsthand the challenge that so many face when looking to purchase a home in Boulder.
She first learned about the city’s Affordable Homeownership Programs when she was looking to purchase a home fifteen years ago and she even toured a few affordable options during her search but settled on a market rate townhome.
“I wish Boulder was more affordable and [donating my townhome to this program] is a way I feel like I can make an impact to help with that,” said Jeni. “It’s important to me that people with a range of incomes can live in Boulder.”
The Housing Legacy Program, enabled by the donation of properties from individuals, corporations and organizations, is dedicated to making homes in our community available to a variety of people. Program participants have the flexibility to outline the terms of their donation through their will. The program helps expand opportunities for homeownership to those with moderate and middle incomes, which helps to achieve economic diversity across the city. Building the Legacy
In 2017, after many years of hard work and determination, Janice Zelazo became the first person to bequeath a home to the city. With the addition of Jeni’s home, there are now four homes committed to the Housing Legacy Program.
Affordable housing is a vital component of a thriving community. Research shows that stable, affordable housing is crucial to a community's health, environment and overall well-being.
Community members who support the Housing Legacy Program are investing in the future of a diverse and affordable community. A planned gift to the Housing Legacy Program is a powerful expression of support for our community and enables the program to make affordable homeownership in Boulder a reality for future generations.
