A look at the city’s flood mitigation efforts and steps you can take now to prepare for future flooding.
Our hearts go out to the people in Texas affected by the recent flooding along the Guadalupe River. The stories and images coming out of Kerr County are a moving reminder of nature’s immense power and unpredictability.
Many of us in Boulder know firsthand the devastation that flooding can bring. The 2013 flood reshaped our landscape and underscored the need for flood preparedness. Flood mitigation projects, community education, flood warning systems, among other measures, all contribute to our collective resilience to flooding events.
Moments like these encourage us to renew our commitment to protecting people, property and the environment. Boulder continues to work towards enhancing community safety through investments in green infrastructure, nature-based solutions and partnerships with local and regional organizations. These efforts are helping us build lasting resilience that protects our community now and into the future.
Here’s a look at some of Boulder’s recent flood mitigation efforts.
- Gregory Canyon Creek Flood Mitigation Project – Planning and design are in progress to address flood risk in this steep watershed that begins in Chautauqua and continues through adjacent neighborhoods. Construction of channel improvements is anticipated to start in fall of 2026 and will increase flood conveyance, enhance environmental protection and reflect community input.
- Upper Goose Creek and Two-Mile Canyon Creek Flood Mitigation Project – Design for this flood mitigation project will begin in late 2025 and will take approximately two years to complete before construction can occur. The project will ultimately address the flood risk in the Goose Creek floodplain as well as aging stormwater infrastructure in an area that experiences repeated flooding in minor storms. It includes strategies to reduce hazards, protect homes and businesses, and improve natural creek function through central Boulder.
- South Boulder Creek Flood Mitigation Project – This project is nearing final design. This large-scale project is aimed at reducing flood risk in southeast Boulder, where thousands of residents and critical infrastructure are located in the floodplain.
- Ongoing Greenways and Creek Restoration Projects – Nature-based design projects are improving the health of riparian corridors, enhancing habitat and increasing flood conveyance throughout the city.
These projects are developed with equity, environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability in mind — helping Boulder adapt to a future with more extreme weather events.
Floods can happen anytime without warning, but there are simple steps community members can take now to stay safe and prepare for future flooding.
- Know your risk – Check if your home or business is in a flood-prone area.
- Stay informed – Sign up for emergency alerts at bocoalert.org or text 88877.
- Be prepared – Have a plan, build an emergency kit and consider flood insurance.
As we face these increasing challenges, our shared responsibility and collaboration matter more than ever. Together, we can prepare for the challenges ahead and protect the safety and well-being of our community.
