Suspicious Object Identified

After further examination, Boulder Police have identified the unusual object that caused the temporary closure of U.S. 36 on Friday night.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a Colorado State Patrol trooper called Dispatch to say he’d discovered what looked to be a pipe bomb on the side of U.S. 36 near Baseline. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 36 were closed and six nearby homes were evacuated for several hours while the Boulder County Regional Bomb Team responded to investigate.

Repeated examinations resulted in inconclusive results about what the object was. The Bomb Team ultimately decided to disrupt the device to render it safe. Further examination over the weekend resulted in detectives identifying the object as an Ignite weighted jump rope that had been modified using pieces of steel bar duct taped on the handles.
