Interested in being a Boulder Fire-Rescue firefighter?

Minimum Qualifications to become a firefighter with Boulder Fire-Rescue

  • Must be 18 years of age or older to apply
  • Must have High School Diploma or GED to apply
  • Prior to a final offer, applicants must complete the following:
    • Medical Evaluation
    • Psychological Evaluation
    • Background Check
  • Applicants are expected to successfully obtain a EMT-B certification by the date of a final offer. Applicants currently in EMT school are welcome to apply.
  • Once hired, all new firefighters are required to attend fire academy and obtain FF1 and HazMat Ops certifcations.
  • By the end of your 1st year with Boulder Fire-Rescue, firefighters are also required to successfully complete FF2.

Steps to becoming a Firefighter with Boulder Fire-Rescue

Apply during an Open Application Period

If you are over the age of 18, have a high school diploma or GED, and believe you can meet the qualifications listed above in the necessary timeframe, you may apply during one of our open application periods.

We hire as needed at Boulder Fire-Rescue. There is no open opportunity at this time. Please check back periodically for upcoming opportunities.

Interviews

An eligibility list is created from applications submitted during each open application period. Selected qualified candidates from that list will be contacted and asked to participate in an interview process.

Further Evaluation

Based on applications and interviews, selected candidates will be asked to complete background, medical and psychological checks. These checks and assessments will be facilitated by Boulder Fire-Rescue.

Eligibility List

Selected candidates who successfully complete further evaluation will be placed on our eligibility list and are considered "ready to hire".

Final Offers

Final offers can be made to people on the eligibility list at any time, though we strive to hire candidates in larger groups whenever possible.
