In 1987, the Landmarks Board established the Structure of Merit program to recognize properties possessing historic, architectural, or aesthetic merit. It is an honorary recognition that does not carry the protection or design review requirement of local landmark designation. Buildings and sites listed on either the National Register of Historic Places or the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties are automatically added to the Structure of Merit program. Currently, more than 75 properties are recognized as Structures of Merit.
