1000 Books Before Kindergarten is designed to encourage parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their children by kindergarten. The mission of 1000 Books is to establish a fun and simple approach to help children become strong readers. “1000 Books models early literacy skills that we encourage during our own storytimes, one of them being to read,” shared Anne Ledford, youth services manager at the Boulder Public Library. “We want caregivers to interact with their children by reading with them. You don’t realize how easy it can be to practice reading and writing until you start participating in the program.”

Boulder Public Library strongly encourages the 5 practices -- Read, Write, Sing, Talk, Play.

Any type of book counts (even the same book multiple times) as long as it is read before kindergarten. Reading just three picture books per day for one year will exceed 1,000 books! (3 x 365 = 1,095). Participating in library storytimes or others reading to your child also counts. It’s that easy! After you reach 1,000 books, your child will be awarded a prize visit any library location to pick it up.
