Here’s some need-to-know information for the week:
City implements improvements to underpass lighting along multi-use paths
Following council guidance and funding this fall, our Transportation and Mobility staff have quickly mobilized to implement two underpass lighting improvements along Boulder’s multi-use path network. Staff have reprogrammed lighting control systems in all the city’s underpasses to now keep lights on 24 hours a day.
As we prepared to make this change, the Transportation and Mobility traffic signals and lighting team decided to take this opportunity to convert existing fluorescent lights to light emitting diodes (LEDs), modernizing our underpass lighting system in support of the city’s sustainability and resilience values. LEDs support safe travel and energy cost savings by improving visibility and energy efficiency. Staff have converted lights to LEDs in nearly 40 underpasses. There are eight underpasses that require additional light fixture parts to be ordered and technical rewiring work to be completed before the city can install the final LEDs, which we expect to wrap up by early 2024.
We appreciate your partnership in improving the safety and efficiency of our multimodal transportation network.
