Guide to Fourth of July openings, closures and happenings in the city

With the Fourth of July holiday this weekend, we wanted to provide you with a summary of happenings around town.

The annual Fourth of July fireworks show, Ralphie's Independence Day Blast, has been canceled this year. The decision to cancel the event was made several months ago as it takes months for CU Boulder, the city, and partners to plan and coordinate. The city could not predict what public health guidance would be this summer, so the event was canceled out of an abundance of caution.

City recreation facilities open July 3 and 4:

  • Boulder Reservoir: Open July 3 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and July 4 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The incoming gate will close at 4 p.m. on July 4. Alcohol is prohibited on July 4 unless you are part of a group renting a picnic site.

  • Flatirons Golf Course: Open to players with pre-paid tee times. Practice facilities and the driving range will be open to the public with no reservation required.

  • Recreation Centers: Scott Carpenter Pool will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 3 and 4. The North Boulder Recreation Center, South Boulder Recreation Center and East Boulder Community Center will be closed July 3 and 4.

The free Park to Park shuttle to Chautauqua Park will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 3, 4 and 5.

Eben G. Fine Park will be open Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4. However, Arapahoe Avenue will be closed from the park to Boulder Canyon Drive.

Boulder Public Libraries will be closed July 4 but will reopen Monday, July 5.

To help reduce fire danger and ensure the safety of all visitors, the city will close open space parking lots on Flagstaff Mountain at 3 p.m. on July 4. Flagstaff Road also will be closed from 5-11 p.m. on July 4. Traffic will be diverted at Sixth Street and Baseline Road. Only residents who live west of Chautauqua will be allowed beyond the closure.

Parking is free on July 4 and 5 in city parking garages and parking lots, and for on-street parking, except in the Chautauqua Park and surrounding neighborhoods.
