Here’s some need-to-know information for the week:
Historic Dushanbe Teahouse – gift from Boulder’s sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan – to undergo restoration this summer
The Dushanbe Teahouse, constructed in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and reassembled on 13th Street in Boulder, is undergoing a restoration project led by Marufjon Mirakhmatov. Mirakhmatov is a Tajik artist and the grandson of a master woodcarver who worked on the teahouse when it was originally reassembled in the city in 1987.
Mirakhmatov will work with interns and students from the University of Colorado, Boulder to restore the city landmark’s façade, interior and furniture. The artistic aesthetic the teahouse is known for dates back thousands of years in Central Asia’s Fergana Valley, which includes parts of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
Mirakhmatov arrived in Boulder from Tajikistan in May, and construction of scaffolding around the teahouse will be completed in the first week of June. Restoration work is expected to continue through July 2024.
Learn more about the landmark and the city’s partnership with Three Leaf Concepts, the management group formed to support several locally owned restaurants, on the city’s website.
