Here’s some need-to-know information for the week

Update on OSMP’s Fort Chambers/Poor Farm Planning Process – Concept Plan

Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) staff will present the Fort Chambers/Poor Farm Concept Plan for consideration by the Open Space Board of Trustees (OSBT) on Wednesday, July 10. The OSBT memo is available online.

The 113-acre property, acquired in 2018, holds historical significance related to the Sand Creek Massacre and offers substantial ecological and agricultural resources. The Concept Plan, developed in collaboration with Tribal Nations, aims to “heal the land and heal the people” through ecological restoration, on-going agriculture, and providing a reflective visitor experience along an interpretive trail. Community engagement has shown strong support for these initiatives. Staff will provide council members with an update on this collaborative tribal process, community and board feedback, and concept plan after the OSBT meeting, later this summer.

Pending guidance to proceed with implementation, next steps include continued collaboration with Tribal Nations and additional community engagement to plan for and design the experience along the healing trail, including associated interpretive elements. Future work also includes initiating ecological restoration and farmstead improvements.

Additional information about the site and planning process is provided on the project webpage.
