King Soopers to begin reopening process with the city; and Temporary Boulder Strong tribute to be installed next week, and Management Changes at the Boulder Airport

Here’s some need-to-know information for the week

King Soopers to begin reopening process with the city

City staff have been working closely with King Soopers as they make plans to reopen their Table Mesa Shopping Center store as quickly as possible. This shopping center is a vibrant neighborhood hub and city staff are committed to working with partners, including King Soopers, to ensure that the south Boulder community has access to groceries and services in this area.

King Soopers has indicated hey will submit several applications this week to the Planning and Development Services Department to begin the reopening process. These applications will fall under the administrative review process to ensure the requested improvements to the building and site meet city regulations. There is no public process on administrative reviews.

Temporary Boulder Strong tribute to be installed next week.

A tribute space will be created near the Table Mesa King Soopers store next week. This space will feature an installation of fresh flowers, donated by King Soopers, to honor the victims of the March 22 mass shooting in Boulder.

Local artists from The Makerie and Fawns Leap developed the installation concept and have been working closely with King Soopers and the City of Boulder’s Office of Arts and Culture to bring it to life. Their concept, a flower “wave” installation, will be temporarily created on a 60’ stretch of fence on the west side of the King Soopers parking area.

The community will be invited from June 25 to 27 to naturally ‘dissolve’ the installation by taking a flower and giving it as a gift to a friend, loved one, neighbor or stranger. The intent of this gift is to acknowledge the ongoing support that has been demonstrated by the community throughout this tragedy. A photo reproduction of the flower wave will be installed on the temporary fence once the ‘dissolve’ is complete.

Management Changes at the Boulder Airport

Following the recent departure of the Boulder Municipal Airport’s airport manager, the city has contracted with Aviation Management Consulting Group to receive assistance in managing the airport and its operations. Under this contract, John Kinney is serving as the Interim Airport Manager while we recruit for the permanent position. John has previously managed airports in numerous locations, including Aspen, CO and Scottsdale, AZ as well as serving in senior leadership positions at Denver International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
