Heads Up March 4, 2022

Here’s some need-to-know information for the week:

Plans for commemorating March 22 shooting coming together

Nearly one year ago, Boulder lost 10 beloved community members in a mass shooting. Our collective commitment to remember that day, the victims of that day’s tragic events and to remain supportive of their families, our neighbors and each other illustrates the true strength of our community.

Like you, we hold the victims of this tragedy in our minds always. On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, we will again gather to recite the March 22, 2021, proclamation, to remember the community members we lost, and to support their families and others forever changed by the events of that day.

City Council members and all members of the community are invited to participate in a variety of ways:

  • Joining the City of Boulder in a moment of silence wherever you are at 2:30 p.m. on March 22. The community can expect that at all City offices and operations will recognize that moment of silence at 2:30 p.m.
  • Attending a Line of Duty Death commemoration at the Boulder Police Department (1805 33rd St., Boulder) at 2 p.m. that day; and/or
  • Joining Mayor Aaron Brockett and City Manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde during a communitywide Day of Remembrance gathering at the Glen Huntington Bandshell from 4:30 to 6 p.m. that day. Several state, federal and local officials may also participate.

These events will be open to the public and will be held outdoors (rain or shine). The city’s Communications and Engagement Department intends to issue a media advisory to begin publicizing these plans later today.

The city is also securing placement of a letter of support to our community in the Daily Camera. This is expected to run on Sunday, March 20.

Additional events are being planned by private organizers as tributes or remembrances on March 22, 2022 and in the days before and after. Mental Health Partners and the Boulder Strong Resource Center will post details about these opportunities on the Boulder Strong Resource Center website as they become available.

Certainly, some of us will want to spend this time in other ways. You should know that today, on March 22, 2022, and always, we remain Boulder Strong together. We are thankful for our first responders, many partners, staff and, of course, the families of those lost for their thoughtful consideration in planning the day’s events.

If you have questions about the events, please contact Assistant City Manager Yvette Bowden at bowdeny@bouldercolorado.gov.

Regards,
Nuria
